MARY LUSCOMBE BOWEN Mary Elizabeth Luscombe was born in Devonshire, England, on the 9th day of June 1843 and was the daughter of William Bishop Luscombe and Susan Sargent Luscombe. She had two brothers and three sisters; John Luscombe, who died in South Wales in 1926, and William Henry Luscombe, living in Beacon, Iowa; Harriet Luscombe Lewis, she died in Cardiff, South Wales, in 1879, and Sarah Luscombe Evans and Elizabeth Luscombe Jones, both living in South Wales. MARY LUSCOMBE BOWEN Mary Elizabeth Luscombe was born in Devonshire, England, on the 9th day of June 1843 and was the daughter of William Bishop Luscombe and Susan Sargent Luscombe. She had two brothers and three sisters; John Luscombe, who died in South Wales in 1926, and William Henry Luscombe, living in Beacon, Iowa; Harriet Luscombe Lewis, she died in Cardiff, South Wales, in 1879, and Sarah Luscombe Evans and Elizabeth Luscombe Jones, both living in South Wales. She moved with her parents to South Wales when three years of age and continued to live there until 1879, and when she came to beacon, Iowa, with her husband and children, and resided in or near there until the time of her death. On the second day of May 1863, she was united in marriage with William Edward Bowen, of neath Abbey, South Wales at Neath, in the Neath Baptist church. Of this union there were born twelve children, nine of whom survive their mother. Joseph, born at Neath Abbey, South Wales, on April 11, 1894, died at birth; James, born at Rhondda Valley, South Wales on April 1st, 1865, died July 26, 1875 at Beacon, Iowa; Mary Ann, born at Rhondda Valley, South Wales, now the wife of F. H. Stevens, is living at Minneapolis, Minnesota; Susannah, born at Pontypridd, South Wales, on July 15, 1869, is married to A. C. Burgess and living at Marshalltown, Iowa; Jemimah, born at beacon, Iowa, on the 15th day of April, 1971, is now the widow of O. L. Sprague, and living at Rose Hill, Iowa; Arthur, born at beacon, on the 13th day of October 1872, died there on the 27th day of July 1874: Frederick, born at beacon, on July 18th, 1874, resides at Worden, Montana; William, born April 17th, 1876 at Beacon, is residing at Worden, Montana; Oscar, born February 3rd, 1878, at Beacon, is living at Oskaloosa, Iowa; Sarah, born at beacon, on November 10th, 1879, is now the wife of W. E. Whitlatch, and living at Oskaloosa; Nellie born at beacon, on January 15th, 1882, now the wife H. E. Malone, is living at Eddyville, Iowa and Gladys, born at beacon, on February 25th, 1887, and still living there, is the wife of E. T. Deaver. The subject of this sketch was baptised into the Christian Brethern church at Pontypridd, South Wales, when 16 years of age, and was a faithful member there until her marriage, when she followed her husband into the Neath Baptist church. Upon coming to Beacon she untied with the First Baptist church at Oskaloosa, and retained her membership there until the organization of the Beacon Baptist church in 1892, when she united by letter with that church and remained a member until the end of her life. She was a willing active worker in all branches of church activity, and despite her physical infirmities, increasing with the passing of the years, she found pleasure in visiting the sick, and afflicted and was always ready to respond in the call of need. Mary Luscombe Bowen died at Beacon. Iowa on the 10th day of May 1921, aged 77 years, 11 months and one day. She is survived by her husband, nine children, thrifty-nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, who mourn their loss, but "rise up and call her blessed." Funeral services were held at 2:30 Thursday afternoon, May 12, 1921, at beacon Baptist church. Reverend E. A. Sabin, pastor of Beacon M. E. Church, officiating. Interment was made in Beacon cemetery.
