O'Connell, age 84 years, a pioneer resident of this locality, passed away on Saturday, September 13, 1924, in the home of her son, Will O'Connell of near Anthon. She had been bedfast for a year but her condition was not alarming until two weeks ago when she became worse and was not relieved until death came silently into her room. The funeral was held on Monday morning at 10:00 at the Anthon St. Joseph's Church where Requiem High Mass was celebrated with Rev. D.K. Hurley officiating. Burial was made in Mt. St. Joseph's Cemetery by the graves of her husband and children who have gone hence. The pallbearers were Con Curtin, William Mahoney, Syl Coyne, Chris Allman, John Heath and Jerry Galvin. Mary Ellen Dixon was born in Ireland on February 14, 1840. At the age of two years she came with her parents to America and first located at Cincinnati, Ohio, where they resided for fifteen years after which they moved to Dubuque Co., Iowa. At Dubuque, in the year 1856, she was united in marriage to Michael O'Connell. To this union eight children were born. They are Mrs. Ed Keneally, Mrs. Dennis Collins, John Will and Dan of Anthon. One son, Michael Jr., died February 1911, another son Patrick and daughter Mary Ellen passed to the other world in infancy. Besides her children she is survived by ten grandchildren, also by one brother, John Dixon of Neola, Iowa, besides a number of nieces and nephews.
