A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Harry H. Koelker and the Rev. Kenneth Gehling officiating. Burial will be in the St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, Dougherty. Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. Sunday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, where a scriptural wake service will be held at 6 p.m. The family of Mary Ellen Murphy has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Mason City Education Foundation or to Hospice of North Iowa in her memory. Mary Ellen Murphy was born on Jan. 18, 1915, in Rockwell, the daughter of Bernard and Christena (Scholl) Galagan. Mary Ellen lived in Rockwell area in her early life except for a few years in North Dakota and Buffalo Center, Iowa. She graduated from Rockwell High School in 1932 and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for one year. She taught in rural schools in Cerro Gordo County as well as Ledyard and Armstrong, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Edward J. Murphy on June 1, 1943, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell. After their marriage together, they farmed in the Dougherty and Nora Springs area. She returned to teaching in 1957 at Rudd, and later taught at Monroe Junior High School in Mason City. During that period, Mary Ellen continued her education by attending night courses and summer school. Mary Ellen graduated from State College of Iowa in Cedar Falls, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1961. She also received a Master of Arts degree from Drake University in 1965, retiring from teaching in 1980 after spending 37 years in the classroom. After her retirement, she enjoyed traveling and visited all 50 states as well as Canada, Mexico and parts of Europe. She and her husband spent 15 winters in RV parks near Alamo, Texas. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mary Magdalene Circle in Mason City, and the Iowa Retired School personnel at both state and local levels. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Maureen Georgou and husband, Robert Guenther, of Bloomington, Minn.; and Marilyn Murphy and husband, David Aguilar, of San Antonio, Texas; three grandchildren: Kim Viesselman, Austin Aguilar and Hunter Aguilar; three great-grandchildren: Jacob, Megan and Rachel Vieselman; several nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward Murphy, who died Oct. 19, 2004; a daughter, Marcia, in infancy in 1951; and her sister, Catherine McCauley.
