Summit, Nora Springs, died Tuesday (Oct. 19, 2004) at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs. A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Harry H. Koelker officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Dougherty. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with a scriptural wake service at 6:30 p.m. followed by a fourth degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of North Iowa. Edward J. Murphy was born May 15, 1913, at Dougherty, the son of John and Rose (Reilly) Murphy. Ed was a 1932 graduate of St. Patrick's High School, Dougherty. He married Mary Ellen Galagan on June 1, 1943, at Sacred Heart Church in Rockwell. Ed and Mary Ellen farmed in the Dougherty and Nora Springs areas for many years. In 1961, they moved to Mason City, where Ed worked at Marshall & Swift, retiring in 1975. He enjoyed traveling, having visited all 50 states. They spent 15 winters near Alamo, Texas. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, both third and fourth degrees. Ed is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Ellen, of Nora Springs; two daughters, Maurine Georgou and her husband, Robert Guenther, of Bloomington, Minn., and Marilyn Murphy and her husband, David Aguilar, of San Antonio, Texas; three grandchildren, Kim Viesselman, Austin Aguilar, and Hunter Aguilar; three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Megan and Rachel Viesselman; a brother, Francis (Gwen) Murphy, of Mason City; a sister, Sister Mary Ellen, P.B.V.M., Dubuque; sisters-in-law, Katherine Murphy and Marcile Murphy; a brother-in-law, Clark Dougherty; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Marcia, in infancy; four brothers, Walter Murphy, the Rev. Joseph Murphy, James Murphy, and Vincent Murphy; two sisters, Mary Merfeld, and Maurice Dougherty.
