Waterloo [Iowa] Courier-- The many friends of Miss Mary Pelton, who was better known as "Mate" Pelton, were shocked to learn that she passed away at the Presbyterian hospital at 4:30 Saturday evening; death being due to acute nephritis. She had been taken sick only a week ago, and took to her bed last Monday. Later in the week her condition grew more serious and on Friday, New Year's Day, it was decided to remove her to the hospital, the illness of her mother and of her younger sister, who underwent an operation for appendicitis five weeks ago, making the removal advisable. On the following afternoon death came and the body was removed to the home of her mother, Mrs. Mary Pelton, 420 Independence Avenue, where many called yesterday to pay their last respects to the loved friend. A short funeral service was held at the home this morning at 8:30 conducted by Rev. W. H. Rollins of the First Congregational church and the body was taken to Osage, the old family home, where the funeral was held from the Congregational chapel this afternoon. A quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Vaughn, Miss Cora Armstrong and W. R. Cole sang the hymn, "I Need Thee Every Hour." The pall bearers were all Waterloo young men, friends of Miss Pelton, William Hammond, John Dickinson, Nic Talty and John O'Neill. The floral emblems were profuse and beautiful, a wagon load of flowers being taken with the body to be placed above her grave. Mary Pelton was born in Osage, Iowa, on June 7, 1878, where she lived until the death of her father Warren B. Pelton, twelve years ago, when the family moved to Waterloo. She was a member of the Congregational church at Osage and frequently attended the services here with her mother. Miss Pelton was employed during the past few years with the James Black Dry Goods company, the L.O. Hieber company, and the Gorham Millinery, being with the last named firm when taken ill. Everywhere in a business and social way, she made many friends through her happy disposition and pleasing manner and those who knew her best find it hard to realize that she is dead. The relatives and a number of friends accompanied the body on its last sad journey, returning on the afternoon train. The relavtives who are left to mourn are the mother, a brother, Stanton, employed with the Fowler company and two sisters, Mrs. H.W. Murphy of Denver, Iowa and Maude Pelton at home.
