It's...impossible to conceive of one human being having suffered from such a wide variety of physical ailments and still being alive, much less having evolved into the cheerful undaunted personality that is Mary Hucka today. ............... Mary Hucka was originally a resident of Lake City, where she passed the first 18 normal, active years of her life. Before she was stricken with neuritis and suffered a nervous breakdown in July, 1915, she had been as enthusiastic member of her high school girls' basketball team, loved to skate and was participant in school musical activities. (Those were the days when she "thought nothing of" the mile-and-a-half walk to and from school every day). She was an ardent fisherman, too and still is. The attack of neuritis, which seem to have initiated her phenomenal record of ill health, occasioned Miss Hucka's first visit to University hospital for seven weeks' treatment, after which she was pronounced well enough to return to her home....condition reoccurred...submitted to a tonsillectomy, first in the operation series. ....In April, 1918, when she was 22, ...was taken to Mayo Clinic at Rochester, Minn....discovered that the offending organs had grown back and greatly enlarged; hence, another operation. In October,...underwent an operation for appendicitis, adhesions and growths...gangrene set in. Recovering...in four weeks,...returned to her home, to have sieges of flu, measles, smallpox, and mumps. By 1920...diagnosed as sinus...which directly and indirectly for 30 operations. Out of 20 operations for sinus, 13 ere performed through the nose and lip.....developed erysipeias ..... Miss Hucka had two teeth and four impacted wisdom teeth cut out. Nine extractions, following which the lower jar refused to heal, occasioned 10 more operations. Removal of two bone cysts... to lower jaw resulted in paralysis of the left side of the long-suffering patient's face. In the summer of 1929, ....had an infected gall bladder, ...ulcers in the stomach...jaundice....set in...operation to remove the gall bladder, adhesions, and growths.... Allergic asthma and hay fever ...of 1934...several vertebrae were out of place causing a nervous condition. In 1937...suffered...with shingles....had arthritis in her joints....developed an infection in her feet...spread to her knee...both arms... ...Miss Hucka has passed 80 weeks in nine different hospitals. Fifty doctors have worked on her case.,..... ...one of the most unusual events...was a sneezing spell which last for seven hours..... If current negotiations materialize, Miss Hucka will have an opportunity to tell her strange story to the world over Robert Ripley's "Believe It or Not" radio program late this spring. Herself a radio fan, she looks forward with a natural excitement to the prospects of broadcasting from New York. For Mary Hucka has never let things "get her down," though physicians, nurses, relatives and friends have repeatedly given up hope for her recovery during the last 24 grueling years. she has...crocheted pieces, embroidered articles and carefully pieced quilts to show for those years and a spunky smile to show that she's good for as many more as the fates decree-and perhaps a few more than that!!
