MARY WATHEN Another Aspen Pioneer, Mrs. Mary Emma Wathen, quietly passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harold Dwyer, last Monday. Ms. Wathen, who until recently lived alone and was well able to take care of herself, began failing rapidly about a month ago and was then moved to her daughter's home for proper care. Mrs. Wathen was born in Lowell, Mass., in 1866 and when a young girl moved to Leadville, and later in the early eighties walked to Aspen over Independence Pass. She lived with a family for several years on a ranch above Aspen, near the present Tagert's Lake. She was married to Mr. William Wathen October 31, 1885 and to this union was born five children. She has lived practically all of her life in Aspen at the family home at the corner of 1st and Francis Streets. Mrs. Wathen will be long remembered by her many friends for her quiet, serene life and her many kind deeds as she passed thru this life. Mr. Wathen preceded her in death in 1925. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Harold Dwyer of Aspen and a son, Charles Wathen of Butte, Montana; 8 granddaughters; and 2 grandsons. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Sardy Mortuary with Rev. Minar Gerrard, pastor of the Community Church in charge. Burial will be in Red Butte Cemetery.
