Bernard, Iowa, March 1.—Mrs. William Cannon, one of the most beloved women of this community, passed away at an early hour Saturday morning, February 26. Although she had been in ill health for several months, her death, nevertheless, came as shock to her family and her legion of friends. Mary Feeney Cannon was born May 19, 1866, on a farm near Zwingle, Jackson county, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood; and on October 26, 1898, was united in marriage to William Cannon, of Bernard, Iowa, at which place she took up her home life and spent the remainder of her days. Mrs. Cannon was the mother of six sons, two having died in infancy, while her husband and four sons survive her. The sons are Prof. Charles B. Cannon, of Cascade; William M., and Dominic A., students at Columbia College, and Paul F. at home in Bernard; also one brother, William F. Feeney, of Lamar, Colorado, and four sisters, Annie, Mrs. John O'Connor, Maggie, and Elizabeth, all of Dubuque. All that loving hands and human skill could do was done to prolong her life but was of no avail and she passed away fortified by the last rites of the Catholic Church, surrounded by her husband, children and friends, listening to the words of our Lord which are addressed to those who have spent good and holy lives. Mrs. Cannon's life was one of unselfish devotion to the highest ideals of Christian motherhood, and as Rev. Father Stuart said in the funeral address: "Her home was a source of happiness and a blessing to all." She took an active interest in all the affairs of the community, and her opinion was sought and held in high regard by all with whom she came in contact. Requiem High Mass was celebrated at 9:30 a. m., Monday, February 28th, at St. Patrick's Church at Garryowen. Rev. P. J. Coffey was celebrant; Rev. J. C. Stuart, president of Columbia College, deacon; and Rev. John J. Leen, of Sacred Heart Church, Fillmore, sub-deacon. Mrs. M. J. Grace, of Dubuque, sang "Veni Jesu" at the offertory of the Mass, and at the conclusion sang "Face to Face," most feelingly and beautifully. The pallbearers, selected from among the members of the Knights of Columbus, with which order Mr. Cannon is affiliated, were Charles F. Smyth, Joseph A. Kelly, David Donovan, Elmer [Meloy?], Thomas Flanigan, Edward Connolly, R. E. Curoe, and Michael Callahan. The floral offerings were many and most beautiful.
