Cannon, Prominent Resident of Bernard, Stricken in Doctor’s Office The announcement of the sudden death of William B. Cannon, a prominent citizen and business man of Bernard at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 30th was received with great surprise and sorrow by his countless friends in Dubuque and Jackson counties, for he was widely known. Mr. Cannon was taken ill while in a barbershop and was assisted to the physician’s office nearby. The doctor gave him a restorative but Mr. Cannon immediately collapsed and died before any further assistance could be given. Death was due to angina pectoris from which he suffered for sometime past. William Bernard Cannon was a son of William and Susanna Cannon and was born at Benton, Wis., November 4, 1866, and therefore 61 years, 7 months and 26 days old when stricken by death. On October 26, 1898, he was married to Miss Mary Feeney at Otter Creek, Jackson county, by Rev. Father Clabby. Four sons were born to them, namely Charles B., of St. Paul, Minn.; Dr. Paul T., of Pender, Neb.; Dominic, of Kilgore, Neb.; and William M., of Bernard; also two sons died in infancy. Mrs. Cannon died February 26, 1921. He is also survived by one brother, James Cannon, of Bernard, and two sisters, Mrs. Catherine Meloy, and Mrs. Mary Sullivan, of Bernard. His brother Michael, died April 21, 1928, and a sister, Mrs. Elsie Sweeney, died several years ago. Mr. Cannon was identified with the business interests of Bernard from its earliest days and was one of the organizers of the town but as a member of the firm Cannon & Donovan, live stock dealers, he was best and most widely known as the firms enterprise and progressive activities made Bernard one of the most important shipping posts on the narrow gauge branch. He was identified with every movement of enterprise and a valuable citizen, whose death is a public loss. He was personally regarded in highest esteem by his fellow citizens. He was liberal and charitable in all his dealings, and in his social affairs. Many of his friends, outside his home town, where unaware he suffered from a treacherous disease, and therefore the shock that followed the news of his death. Mr. Cannon was a staunch member of the Catholic church and a loyal member of Cascade Council Knights of Columbus. The funeral services were held from the residence to St. Patrick's church, Garry Owen, Tuesday, July 3, 1928, at 9 a.m., and were very largely attended by old friends and neighbors. A solemn requiem high Mass was celebrated by Rev. D. P. Mulcahy, pastor, assisted by Very Rev. Dean Conry, of Dubuque, as deacon; Rev. O'Connell, of Dubuque, as sub-deacon. Rev. Conry preached the sermon. The pallbearers were Dave Donovan, C. F. Smyth, John Burke, Ed. Connolly, Clarence Meloy, Mike Callahan, Dave O'Connell and John Hogan. Burial took place in the adjoining cemetery.
