Orangeville Banner, March 15, 1928 - Mrs. S. J. Brown An old and highly regarded resident of this district was called home last week in the person of Mrs. S. J. Brown, who passed away at her residence on Wellington St. on Friday morning, March 9th. Mrs. Brown, who was in her 75th year, had been in poor health for the last three years and her death was by no means unexpected. An interesting coincidence is found in the fact that her death followed so closely that of her old friend and neighbor, Mrs. James Golden. The two women spent the greater part of their lives on adjoining farms in Amaranth, where they were not only close neighbors but warm friends. Mrs. Brown, whose maiden name was Mary Margaret Frances Johnston, was born in New Jersey in 1853 and moved to Amaranth with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. James Johnston, in 1862. She was married to Mr. S. J. Brown, afterwards Deputy-Reeve of Amaranth, in October, 1873, taking up her residence on the Brown homestead, lot 6, con. 3, Amaranth, where she resided until after the death of her husband about twelve years ago. Eight or nine years ago Mrs. Brown and her daughter left the farm and came to Orangeville to live. Deceased was a woman of a kindly, hospitable nature, ready in her sympathies and never happier than when doing a good turn. As a neighbor she was held in the highest esteem. She was a kind, affectionate mother whose memory and good deeds will be held in tender remembrance by her family. She was the mother of nine children, seven of whom survive to mourn her loss. These are: Mrs. Jane Bryan, Toronto; Mrs. W. S. Golden and John S. and James, of Amaranth; William H., George B. and Miss Mary, of Orangeville. A son, Stanley, was killed in action at the Battle of Cambrai on October 1st, 1918. The late Mrs. Brown was a staunch member of Laurel Presbyterian church for many years and had been identified with St. Andrew's church since coming to Orangeville. There was a large attendance of Orangeville people and old Amaranth neighbors and friends at the funeral, which was held from her late residence to Greenwood cemetery on Sunday afternoon. Rev. C. G. Armour conducted services at the house and grave. The pallbearers were the four sons, Mr. W. S. Golden, son-in-law, and Mr. Harold Bryan, Toronto, a grandson. The floral tributes included: Pillow from the family; wreath, the grandchildren; spray, W.M.S. St. Andrew's church; spray, The Maples Women's Institute; spray, Mr. Mrs. D. J. McKim; wreath, the Howe family; two sprays, the Golden family; wreath, Mr. B. Harrington; spray, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Wallace and Mr. Alf Brown; spray, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Curry; wreath, the Johnston family; spray, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Smith, and a spray, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Speers.
