Mason City Globe Gazette Monday September 3, 1962 #2 OSAGE SLEEPING SICKNESS CASE "NOT CONTAGIOUS" Des Moines -- there is no indication of danger to other persons from a fatal case of encephalitis in norther Iowa. Dr. Ralph Heeren of the State Health Department said Tuesday. Dr. Heeren said the fatal illness of Mrs. Robert N. Hemann, 29, of Osage was diagnosed as encephalitis. There was no indication as to what type, he said. She died last Sept. 2. He said encephalitis is an inflamation of part of the brain and may be temporary or fatal. Dr. Heeren said it may be caused by a virus, such as the encephalitis now being found at St. Petersburg, Florida, or it may be caused my mumps, measles, a cancer of other diseaseds. He said there was no autopsy and no determination of what type of encephalitis Mrs. Hemann had. He said a check of her habits, her illness leading to her death, and the fact that no persons or animals in her area have shown effects of the disease indicate that it was not a contagious type.
