Mary was born on April 14, 1921 in O'Neill, Nebraska, the daughter of William H. and Mary Genevieve (Mullen) Harty. Mary graduated from St. Mary's Academy, O'Neill, Nebraska and then attended Grand Island Business School. She returned to O'Neill, Nebraska and worked in the courthouse, where she met her future husband, Kevin K. Kocina. Mary was born on April 14, 1921 in O'Neill, Nebraska, the daughter of William H. and Mary Genevieve (Mullen) Harty. Mary graduated from St. Mary's Academy, O'Neill, Nebraska and then attended Grand Island Business School. She returned to O'Neill, Nebraska and worked in the courthouse, where she met her future husband, Kevin K. Kocina. During World War II Mary worked in Chicago, Illinois for the United States Government. After the war, she worked as a legal secretary in Chicago, Illinois. Mary celebrated her 80th birthday in Chicago, Illnois with her family and retraced where she had lived and worked. Mary loved her community of O'Neill, Nebraska and enjoyed her group of friends known as the Terrible Ten. They bought a car together, which they called Pokie, and gave people rides hoping they would put in gas. This fun-loving group even invited their parish priest for a ride hoping he would be generous. Mary was a member of the Girl's Basketball Team known as the Daffy Dandies and she loved to watch basketball until her death. After her marriage to Kevin K. Kocina on August 29, 1946, Mary embraced her new town of Creighton, Nebraska, and over the years became involved in many facets of the community. She was an active member of the St. Ludger Parish, served as a co-chair of the Red Cross Bloodmobile, and helped to develop the corner park on Main Street. Mary and Kevin lived and worked in Omaha, Nebraska, for several years. She was the secretary and receptionist at Duchesne Academy, Omaha, Nebraska where she was honored by the Alumnae Association for her years of dedication. Upon returning to Creighton for retirement, Mary was the volunteer secretary at St. Ludger (NE.) Elementary School, was in charge of Labels for Education, and was the membership chair for the Creighton (NE.) Historical Society Lovingly referred to as "The Irish Lass" by her family, she was able to visit Ireland in 2000. Mary is survived by: daughters and their spouses, Lynn and Bill Birkby, Kay and Armand Pulcinella, and Margie Kocina and Jerry Russo; sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Bob Sharp; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Burial was in the St. Ludger Cemetery Cemetery, Creighton, Nebraska.
