Pioneer of Willowdale Passes to Her Rest on Wednesday The death on Wednesday of Mrs. Thomas Hoskin, after a lengthy illness, removed one of the best known and best loved pioneers of the Willowdale district, a lady whose generous hospitality and ready sympathy had been at the service of that district for the thirty-six years of her residence there, and who, since her removal to Red Deer in 1921, had never lost her touch with, nor her interest in the community in which she came with her husband when he homesteaded forty years ago. Mrs. Hoskin was born near Toronto, Ontario, in November, 1851. Her father and mother were English, and her father was a Methodist local preacher. On February 29, 1876, she was married at Toronto to Thomas Hoskin. They farmed the first year of their married life and then moved into the city, which was their home until they came west with their family in 1894. They came straight to Red Deer and took up land in Willowdale on which they made their home until they moved to Red Deer in 1921. In that year they purchased the property on the hill overlooking Red Deer on the east from Judge Lees, and that has been the home since. In 1930 Mr. Hoskin passed away and for the past eighteen months Mrs. Hoskin has been failing. She was an active woman up until the past few months, and took a keen interest in the life of the district. She took special delight in church work and was one of the first Sunday School teachers in Willowdale, and during her whole life was a faithful and valuable supporter of the Methodist and United Churches in their work. Her energy, enthusiasm and generosity will not be forgotten easily. Mrs. Hoskin leaves one daughter, Mrs. A. H. Cody, Willowdale; two sons, Arthur of Willowdale, and William of Calgary; seventeen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. They will have sympathy in their loss.
