Mary Irene Sudol was born March 5, 1888 at Monona, IA the daughter of Jake and Mary Sudol. The family later moved to Nashua, IA the home of the "Little Brown Church". She was married July 24, 1906 to Fred H. Downing at Nashua. They came to South Dakota in 1910 settling near Faulkton. Later they moved to Spring Township, Hand County where they farmed until their retirement in 1957, when they moved to Orient. Her husband died July 28, 1959 and she continued to live in Orient until the fall of 1971 when she moved to Miller making her home with her children, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Downing and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Van Rosendale until she entered Prairie Center. Mrs. Downing attended the Methodist Church and was a charter member of the Senior Citizens Friendship Center where she enjoyed the weekly dances and other entertainment provided there. She is survived by four daughters: Mrs. H.R. (Leah) Hansen, Orient, Mrs. Charles (Florence) Van Rosendale, Miller, Mrs. R. C. (Timmie) Jacobson, Sioux Falls and Mrs. Darrow (Cleone) Weaver, Rapid City; three sons, Burdette, Vancouver, WA; Donald, Miller and Fred, Rockham; two sisters, Lottie Miller, Charles City, IA and Lena Cahol, Nashua; a sister-in-law, Ethel Sudol, Nashaua, 26 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant daughter, three sisters and two brothers. Funeral services were held Monday, March 17 at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald Greenough officiating. Interment was in the Prairie View Cemetery, Orient. Pallbearers were grandsons, Robert Jacobson, Robert Hansen, Landis Weaver, Lauren Van Rosendale, Joey Downing and Gordon Downing. Honorary pallbearers were: Lawrence Grunewaldt, Alvin Nissen, John Wiedean, Cleo Leafgreen, Elton burke Sr., Cornenus Wilson, Casey Schutlz, Sr., Walter Johnson and Thomas Grogan.
