Dorrance was born December 31, 1843, in Pavilion, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. She departed this life in Ohiowa, Neb., January 31, 1939, at the grand old age of 95 years and 20 days. Being the eldest of thirteen children, her early life was spent in the home, and then for several years in teaching in the public schools in Michigan. October 26, 1871, she was married to Alonzo B. Johnson of Kalamazoo, Mich. The following year they left by covered wagon for the west. They reached Plattsmouth, Neb., April 11, 1873, and then came on to Fillmore County, where they homesteaded near what is now Ohiowa. In the fall of 1908 they moved to the town of Ohiowa, where she resided the balance of her life. Two daughters came to bless their home. Mrs. Maud Klatt, who preceded her in death in 1916, and Mrs. Cora Bell, with whom she has made her home the last years. Mr. Johnson preceded her in death September 6, 1925. Those who survive her are her daughter, Mrs. Cora Bell, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and other relatives and a host of friends, who will miss her. The body of Mrs. Johnson was taken at noon Monday, January 23, from the I. J. Bell home to the Methodist Church for funeral services, where it lay in state until 2 o'clock. The officiating pastor, Rev. S. G. Rasmusson carried out the service to her wish, using as his text Job 5:26. A quartet, George Green, Mrs. Albert Bahe, Mrs. I. C. Steel and Gordon Rasmusson, with Mrs. C. W. McFarland at the piano, sang favorite selections, "Abide with Me" "Rock of Ages" and "The End of the road." Mrs. McFarland played "Largo" from the New World symphony by Anton Dvorak, as friends passed the funeral bier. Mrs. Johnson loved flowers and their culture, and many beautiful sprays and designs were sent for the last rites. In her hand was a corsage of sweet peas, placed by her grandson, Ross Bell. Mrs. Lucille Hodek and Mrs. Irvin Sieckmann were in charge of the floral offerings. Surviving besides the above mentioned are three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. D. B. Peney of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Etta Eberstein of Wichita, Kas., whose condition was grave at this time, Mrs. Nell McKain of Vicksburg, Mich., Charles Dorrance of Fontana, Cal. Beautiful sprays expressed their affection for their departed sister, which they could not do in person because of the great distance. Casket bearers were P. J. Gundermann, E. J. Lynn, R. J. Yates, Don Thornton, E. R. Lindgren and Dr. V. L. Upton.
