Read More	**IN LOVING MEMORY OF** Mary Jane Angstead Smith was born October 30, 1930 to Ira and Lula Angstead. She died of cancer, October 6, 1996, at Kavanaugh House in Des Moines at the age of 65. Mary Jane grew up in Chariton and graduated from Chariton High School in 1949. On October 30, 1949 she was united in marriage to Darus Lee Smith and to this union five children were born: Darus Mahlon of Runnells, IA; Marsha (Ed) Payne of Des Moines; Nancy (Ray) Baldwin of Whitehouse, TX; Melody (David) Wayne of Springhill, KS; Melinda (Jeff) Lane of Colorado Springs, Co. Mary Jane was a lifelong area resident of Lucas Co., IA. She was a member of the Chariton Church of the Nazarene, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was employed at the Tenco Workshop as an assistant supervisor. She also served on the Tenco Board of Directors, as well as the board of the American Retardation Association. Mary Jane was an active member in the Chariton, Lucas County Genealogical Society and the Iowa State Genealogical Society. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ira and Lula Angstead, husband of 14 years, Darus Smith; six siblings, Iris Davenport, Irene Williams, Donovan Angstead, Gay Steinbach, Fay Olson and Mahlon "Buster" Angstead in WW II. Survivors include her five children: four sons-in-law; six grandchildren, Allison Payne, Austin Baldwin, Sarah Payne, Geoffrey Baldwin, Heather Wayne, and Nathaniel Lane; two sisters, Norma Young of Des Moines, and Marguerite Johnson of New Mexico; one brother Sonny Murphy of Elizabethtown, KY; two sisters-in-law, Lanell Rowland and Eunice Smith of Knoxiville and neices, nephews and many friends. She is greatly missed by all who knew her, she had many friends. Our home was a happy and warm home to come home to from school everyday. I remember walking home on my lunch breaks to spend time with mom and have coffee with her. We would bring her home library books we knew she would like to read, and even her favorite Snickers Candybar. Even just to ride out to Red Haw State Park to enjoy the beautiful water and scenery. She filled our home with books, music and love of God and her sense of humor was well-loved by her friends and family. Services were held Wednesday, Oct. 9, 1996, at the Church of the Nazarene in Chariton. Interment was in the Gosport Cemetery in Marion County, IA. Mosher Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were: Lee Harrington, Everett Beals, Chris Belew, David Wayne, Neil Carruthers and Richard Mathes.
