He passed from this life into the arms of Jesus on October 30, 1963 at his farm home near Garden Grove, Decatur, IA, from accidental gun shot wounds suffered while going down an icy driveway to the barn to shoot a wolf that was after his chickens and livestock. Darus Lee Smith, youngest son of Earl Austin & Mina Mae (Spaur), was born near Knoxville, IA, on October 12, 1928. He passed from this life into the arms of Jesus on October 30, 1963 at his farm home near Garden Grove, Decatur, IA, from accidental gun shot wounds suffered while going down an icy driveway to the barn to shoot a wolf that was after his chickens and livestock. Darus died at the age of 35 years, 2 months and 18 days. At the time of his death he was employed by IOWA PACK in Des Moines, Polk, IA. He was united in marriage to Mary Jane Angstead on October 30, 1949 at the Methodist Parsonage at Chariton, IA. To this union were born 5 children, one son, Darus Mahlon 13, Marsha Jane 10, Nancy Elaine 8, Melody Lorraine 5, and Melinda Fay 3. He was a great father and is greatly missed by his family and friends who had the privilege to cross his path in life. There were over 200 people at his funeral, Jan 1, 1964. He was also very active in the Church of the Nazerene and helped to build the church building in Knoxville, IA. Besides his wife and children, Darus is survived by his father and mother, one brother, the Rev. Harry LaVern Smith of Moravia, and one sister, Lanell Rowland of Columbia, IA, five nephews, four nieces and many other relatives. Services were held from the Chariton Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. J.C.Leonard and the Rev. Homer Max officiating. Miley Funeral Home in Chariton, IA was in charge of arrangements and internment was at the GOSPORT CEMETERY, South of Knoxville, Iowa. Miley Funeral Home was in charge of services in Chariton, IA.
