The 1900 Indian Creek Township, Anderson County, Kansas census records Mary J. as the mother of 3, with 2 living. She was the second wife of L. H. Merdick. They had been married for 31 years. Mary J. Merdick remained in Anderson County after the death of her husband. She was with the John Carter family in the 1915 state census. Sarah J. Merdick, age 92, born in North Carolina, was also listed. The 1920 Peoria, Maricopa, Arizona census shows Mary living with her son, Frank Merdick, age 50 KS, his wife Mary, and their family. Mary J.'s death year is inscribed on the same grave stone as her husband. The last digit is very hard to read. ---------------------- An 1887 record from the Bear Valley GAR Post # 44 at Shockeyville in Grant County, Kansas, records the birth place of L. H. Merdick as Westmorland County, Pennsylvania. He enlisted as a Sergeant in August of 1862 in the 12th Kansas Infantry. He mustered out in June of 1865. L. H.
