A visitation will be held Friday, November 29th at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church with a mass of Christian burial at 11:30 a.m. A luncheon will be served immediately after the service with a burial to take place on a later date in Ida Grove. Mary's Life Story Mary Jane (Webster) Schafer was born on May 20, 1944, in Fort Dodge. She attended St. Edmond's Catholic Schools in Fort Dodge, graduating in 1962. After high school, MJ went to nursing school at St. Joseph's College of Nursing in Sioux City. She served as President of her Nursing Student Body and graduated in 1965. It was here that MJ discovered her love for the nursing profession. After nursing school, MJ worked on the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the University of Iowa Hospitals from 1965-1966. It was during this time that on a blind date, she met her future husband, Michael Schafer, of Le Mars. MJ married Mike on September 3, 1966, and they moved to Sibley, Iowa, where Mike was working in the Sibley Schools. The couple was blessed with three daughters, Jill, Molly and Amy. MJ worked at Dr. Thomas' Clinic in Sibley from 1966-1968 as a staff nurse. From 1968-1989, MJ served as an O.B. nurse and as the O.B. Director at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley. During their 23 years in Sibley, the couple raised their 3 daughters and made life-long friendships. MJ especially enjoyed her fellow nursing friends, ladies Bowling League, Bridge Club and their Couples Bridge Club. In 1989, Mike and MJ moved to Boone, where MJ worked on the Surgical Unit at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames from 1990 until her retirement in 2008. Mike and MJ moved to Ames in 1998. MJ enjoyed travelling and went on European and Ireland tours with her daughters. Other favorite trips were to Arizona, Florida and Las Vegas. She liked to read, go to movies, and later in life, spend as much time as possible with her grandchildren. MJ's favorite things in life really weren't things at all, but rather her family, friends, faith and her nursing profession. She especially loved babies, and helped deliver countless newborns into the world. She bestowed goodness on all those she met and was a loyal mother and friend. She always put others' needs first. Mary Jane stood for all the things God expects of us, never wavering. Mary Jane was diagnosed with Early Alzheimer's disease in 2012. Mike and MJ moved to West Des Moines in 2017 to be close to daughter Molly. MJ's faith in God continued to be strong throughout her disease's progression, and her devoted husband, Mike, never left her side. Mike and MJ celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with their family in 2016. Mary Jane, 75, died peacefully on November 24, 2019, at MercyOne Hospice, in Johnston. She will be forever missed by her husband, Mike, of 53 years; Daughters, Jill (Kent) Godbersen of Ida Grove and children Reed, Carson and Morgan; Molly (Jeff) Cleven of Cumming and his children Tyler and Hannah; Amy (Sean) Mc Grevey of Overland Park, KS, and children Danica, Megan and Erin; her siblings, Sue (Dick) Eads of Marshalltown; John (Roxanne) Webster of Fort Dodge; Tom Webster of Fort Dodge; Annie (Greg) Fitzgerald of Fort Dodge; Jim (Kittie) Webster of Milford; Bob (Marilyn) Webster of Mc Donough, GA; and Dr. Elizabeth (Kurt) Stoebe of Humboldt; a brother-in-law, Tom Schafer and JP Jones of Linden, VA; sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Walker of Ottumwa and Betty (Joel) Hagler of Huntington Beach, CA; 24 nieces and nephews and many special Stageman relatives. Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Mary Alice (Stageman) Webster; a brother, Mark Webster; and a brother in law, Norman Walker.
