(Death record of Mary) Her father was a dairy farmer and merchant and died when she was a child and had served in the war of 1812. Her mother lived to 106 yrs of age. Married Henry L. Gordon Feb 14, 1850 in Providence RI. She was the mother of Mary Emma who died young and two other children left minors at the death of their father in 1865. Henry L. Gordon of Holderness NH died in a railroad disaster at Newark NJ 1865 along with six others. His wife was aboard but was not injured. His wife was given as Mary Jane Gordon in press coverage of the rail crash. Mrs. Gordon stated that her husband was 42 and had been killed in the accident and was at the time an owner of the coaches at Willard's Hotel in Washington. She stated she had two children, daughters, ages fourteen and three and that she had left home on Monday last with her husband and children on their way to Washington. Passing through Warwick a switch being out of place the smoking car where he husband was located ran off the tracks. Mrs. Gordon was in a different car and she found her husband dead lying on the ground. Another witness in the smoking car with her husband stated Henry was killed instantly. In 1870 Mary J. was living in Ashland and had two children Ida M. age 18 born Massachusetts and Ruth C. age 8 born New Hampshire. She owned a home and did not work. In 1880 Mary and her two daughters Ida May age 26 and Ruth C. age 18 resided in Boston Massachusetts. Mary was enumerated as Mrs. H. L. Gordon, widowed age 57. There were also three lodgers in the household, EE Beede, diamond dealer, Mr. Hunting, Clothing Dealer and wife or daughter Mary Hunting. Mary died at age 80, 6 mos and 3 days in Meredith having come to that place from Brookline Massachusetts. Mary died widowed of old age. Burial was in Ashland Nov 5, 1902, HO Moulton, undertaker, Meredith. Mary was buried with her husband and shares his stone in Green Grove Cemetery. Buried with them were daughters Mary Emma, Ida M. and Ruth (Gordon) Briggs. Note: her stone shows Mary W. Gordon but death record give name as Mary J. and on marriage record as Mary Jane. Death record also gives YOB as 1823 and stone reads 1822.
