Description	:	CASCADE - Mary Jean (Rumney) Parsons, 87, of Cascade, died of natural causes on Tuesday at her home. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Croxford Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorial Services are 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Methodist Church in Cascade, with reception immediately following. Interment in Chesnut Valley Cemetery will occur later in the afternoon. Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn (Jim) Williams, of Helena; sons, Randall Parsons and Steve (Barbara) Parsons, both of Cascade; five grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Nina Dear, of Great Falls; and a sister-in-law, Lorraine Rumney, of Cut Bank. "Jean," as she was known to friends and family, was born Aug. 9, 1922, in Springdale, Montana. She was raised in the Chesnut Valley area near Cascade and graduated from Cascade High School. She and Rupert Parsons were married on Dec. 4, 1940. She worked with her family on the ranch and farm, and ran Adel and Mission "Star" mail routes for 30 years. She also ran a daycare for a time. She and Rupert also owned and operated Parsons Outfitting on the south fork of Stickney Creek from its inception in the early '50s until the present day. She was honored as "best hunting-camp cook" by some of her patrons and she also made wedding and birthday cakes for many people. She was a member of Daughters of the Nile and Order of the Eastern Star, and also was involved in the Red Hat Society and Women's Club throughout the years. She was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School. She contributed to "Mountains and Meadows," a history of Cascade and surrounding areas. One of Jean's favorite things to do was feed people and have friends and family visit. She loved cooking and baking. She also enjoyed riding and was quite an accomplished horsewoman. She ranched from an early age and could often be found working alongside her father or husband in the field. She was not only a model homemaker, but was outdoorsy and adventurous as well. Jean loved do-it-yourself projects and was very self-sufficient, always tackling projects earnestly. She was quite musically talented, often singing solos, and was a member of several different choirs. Jean also helped raise not only her own kids, but also grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as well as those who weren't family. If you needed a bed, a warm meal, or a place to stay, Rupert and Jean's house was the place to be. One of her greatest joys was hospitality, which is reflected in one of her favorite sayings: "the latch string is always out." Jean also had a great sense of humor, was a classy dresser and loved to shop, especially at Kitson's in Cascade. Rupert preceded her in death on May 13, 1989. Others who preceded her in death are a brother, Bill Rumney; a sister, Frances Bruneau; a stepgrandson, Casey Casavant; a niece, Carol Stevens; and a nephew, Nathaniel "Buck" Dear.
