Read More	PARENTS: Charles Columbus and Josephine Margaret (Read) Boyd MARRIAGE: Joe Rufus Hudspeth MARRIAGE DATE: January 10, 1948 / Spokane County, WA Mary Jo Hudspeth (age 88), a 70-year resident of Fruitland, passed away on August 11, 2016 in the Spokane Valley, following a long battle with Vascular Dementia. Mary's oldest brother was the first to welcome her as he assisted in her delivery on Oct. 29, 1927 in Wheatland, Wyoming. She was the daughter of Charles Columbus and Josephine Margaret (Read) Boyd. While growing up, Mary resided in several communities. The family traveled with her father's work opportunities. Consequently, before she graduated from high school in 1946, she lived in 10 different towns and cities and attended 10 different schools. It was within this schooling that she rode up to seven miles on horseback to school, rode on one of the first school buses, and played clarinet in the Denver, Colorado Youth Symphony. The symphony experience fostered a lifelong passion for music that she lovingly passed to her children and grandchildren. Due to the teacher shortage of WWII, Mary tested out of school in her junior year while at Hanford, but promised her folks to return at a later date. Mary stayed in Hanford when her folks retired and moved to a farm in Fruitland Valley. However, when her mother fell ill, Mary moved to Fruitland to help care for her. There, she completed her education and graduated from Columbia High School in Hunters. While attending a dance at the Hunter Creek Grange, Mary met Joe Rufus Hudspeth, a local farmer who lived across the valley from her. Not only was he the "cutest of all the local farmers," but more importantly, she saw in him a "steadiness and a future of settling in one place." A budding friendship led quickly to love and they were wed on Jan.10. 1948. Nine months later, to the day, their family began with the birth of their first of seven children. Mary worked in the home and on the family ranch until her decline in health required she relocate in Jan. of 2012 to the Pine Ridge Memory Care facility in the Spokane Valley. Mary was very involved in her children's education and participated in the community as a 4-H leader, and was a founding member of the "Sundowners" 4-H horse club group. She and Joe also proudly represented as the Grand Marshalls for the Hunter's Fair in 1998. She earned the affectionate name of "Grandma Cookie" through her ministry of baking thousands of her honey sweetened cookies to children in the "Kids Club" after school program through her church. She also nurtured the physical well-being of many children as a cook at the Fruitland Bible Camp. It was at this camp she also turned her heart and life to the Lord in the early 70's; Joe followed shortly. Her life was dedicated to her faith, the farm and her family. She embraced the special times with her grandchildren and they especially enjoyed the weeklong "stayovers" at Grandma's in the summertime. Her table was always open, her ear always available for the troubled in heart, as well as a place to live if needed. To summarize Mary's life, Proverbs 32:29 says it best: "Many women have done well, but you excel them all." Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, on Oct. 7, 2015 and by her seven siblings: Arthur, Fern, Glen, Gene, Mildred, Chuck and Dean. She is survived by her seven children: Dan and his wife Deena; Chris and her husband Ron; John and his wife Denise; Mark and his wife Debra; Sue; Connie; Michaele (Missy) and her husband Bruce; Helmut, exchange student from 1992, who became a member of our family, his wife Judith, and two children in Wachtberg, Germany; 28 grandchildren and 46 great- grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and a host of extended family. All are welcome to a memorial service for Mrs. Mary Jo Hudspeth at the Fruitland Bible Camp in Fruitland beginning at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10, followed by a meal. A private ash committal will complement the service at the Hunters Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest with her husband, Joe. Memorial contributions may be given to the Enterprise Ladies Club or to the Fruitland Bible Camp. Danekas Funeral Chapel Crematory has been entrusted with the arrangements.
