Read More	Mary Joan (Courtney) BROWN (02/14/1936 - 09/22/2016) Was born to Clyde and Lela Courtney in Prairie Grove, Arkansas on February 14, 1936 and passed away September 22, 2016. She was the fifth of seven children, our family Valentine, a sunny little girl who would defend others to the end. Her family moved to Washington where she graduated from Vancouver High School. She loved being physically active, laughing at the irony of life, cooking great meals, having dogs and she especially loved her country. Her deepest happiness and joy in life was in having her two wonderful sons, David Scott Brown born in 1960 and Jon Courtney Brown, born in 1966. Her granddaughters, Chloe and Bridget were loved so much. In fact, her move from California to Spokane was to be nearer to them. She so admired watching Chloe grow into a beautiful and successful woman, and Briget, a kind girl whose art Joan cherished proudly. Joan was so grateful to Courtney and Mary for the love, care and help they gave her, especially as she grew more frail. Joan worked in several jobs including working for the Commanding Officers in the Army post in Portland which required security clearance. Her final career was as an insurance auditor in California. Possibly, she was the last person on earth who could write in shorthand! When she came to Spokane, she found meaningful volunteering at the food bank. What made Joan so special was she always saw people as individuals to love and help. Joan collected her many friends like she collected art...beautiful and fun to have and enjoy. We offer a special thank you to special friends and neighbors, Donna and Laura, who stepped in and helped Joan when she needed it. Joan is survived by her two sons and their wives, David and Joelyn, Courtney and Mary and her granddaughters, Chloe and Bridget. She will also be deeply missed by her remaining sisters, Robbie Roy and Courtney Cox and her many nieces and nephews. Our good news is she will be greeted in Heaven by her Saviour, Jesus Christ, and her loving family. The memorial service for Joan will be Saturday, October 8, at 11 A.M. at Fairmount Memorial Park in the Sunset Chapel. Special rememberances in Joan's name to Hospice House of Spokane are welcome.
