She was the daughter of John and Ellen Ponder of Junction City and the sister of Peter "Harper" Ponder. She married Richard Martin in El Dorado, Arkansas in 1951 and moved to Shreveport in 1952. She was mother to Rusty, David, Bruce, Keith, Ruth, Sheila, Doug and Laura; mother-in-law to Joyce, Madolyn, Stan, Gary and Scott; grandmother to Nate, Maggie, Josh, Grace, John, Christopher, Aimee, Justin, Kate, Drew and Ella; grandmother-in-law to Brandon, Amy, Theresa and Ryan; and great-grandmother to Archie, Milly, Jacob, Tanner, Steele, Sibley and Perrin. A small business owner most of her life, she owned and operated Kay's Philatelic Service - a downtown Shreveport stamp collector's store in the 1960's and later Ace Rubber Stamp & Plastic Sign Company - a well-respected, family-run business until 1985. She later joined Cloth World, now known as JoAnn Fabrics, in 1985 and retired in 2015 after 30 years of service. She was known to her customers as "Ms. Kay." She was a charter member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Shreveport and grew up attending Scotland Church in Junction City, Arkansas.
