Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Schriver's Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements. Liturgical wake service will be 7:00 p.m. Monday, September 21, 2009 at the mortuary. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday at the mortuary and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church. Friends may sign online guest book at the bottom of the page. Mary passed away in Excelsior, Minnesota, on September 17, 2009, with her son John at her side. Mary Kathleen Coffman was born to Ernest and Martha (Johnson) Coffman on April 2, 1932, in Independence, Kansas. While attending college in Lawrence, Kansas, she met her husband, Anthony (Tony) John Pitz. The two married on June 11, 1955. As Tony pursued his medical studies, Mary worked as a medical technologist up until the time they had their first daughter, Ann, on June 10, 1963. Upon her husband's completion of his Navy obligations, they moved to California where her husband continued his career as a physician, and Mary became a homemaker. She gave birth to her second daughter, Betty, on November 11, 1968, and added a son, John, on May 27, 1970. Mary loved her family and focused most of her efforts on them. She worked hard to create a healthy and fun environment for her children to grow up in. As she and her husband owned Pitz Farms, Inc. in Aberdeen, South Dakota, they were able to offer their children the unique opportunity to spend each summer in Aberdeen as they were growing up. Mary supported her children in any way she could, attending ballet lessons, baseball games, girl scouting events, and just being there to offer support and encouragement. She had a love for animals and over the years had many household pets including dogs, birds, fish, doves, and even a rooster! Mary had a fascination with genealogy and joined the Daughters of the American Revolution to pursue this interest further. Additionally Mary had a great love for music. She often played piano and sang at home. She and Tony greatly enjoyed musicals and plays. People who knew her well would describe her as gentle, kind, patient, generous, and loving. Mary was proud to see her children graduate from college, marry, and begin their own families. Sadly, shortly after her first grandchild was born in 1998, her husband passed away as a result of cancer. Wanting to be closer to her children who had relocated upon growing up, Mary moved from California and maintained residency in San Antonio, Texas, down the street from her daughter, Betty, as well as in Aberdeen, close to her daughter, Ann. Mary enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and children in her retirement years. As Mary's health began to decline and she became in need of additional assistance, she eventually left her home in San Antonio and moved to Aberdeen full time. Shortly thereafter, her daughter, Ann, was diagnosed with a brain tumor and began to decline in health herself, causing Mary to move to Minnesota where John and his family could assist her. It is there where she spent her remaining days. Mary is survived by her sister, Jeanne Eisenbise of Independence, Kansas, her daughter, Betty (Mark) Backous of San Antonio, Texas, her son, John (Carol) Pitz, of Chanhassen , Minnesota, son-in-law Dale Heiser of Aberdeen and her five grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Anthony John Pitz, her daughter, Ann Heiser, of Aberdeen, South Dakota, and her brother Harold Coffman, of Cherryvale, Kansas. Family prefers memorials to the American Cancer Society or Aberdeen Area Humane Society.
