After a long period of ill health, Mrs. Mary Cary passed away at her home in south Malvern last Saturday, April 1. The funeral was held from the Methodist church in Malvern, Monday, afternoon. It was largely attended by old friends and neighbors who had known her so many years and loved and respected her. Mrs. Cary was one of the early settlers of this county, coming here nearly 56 years ago, and locating on a farm southeast of Hastings, where she resided until a few years ago when she moved to Malvern to spend her declining years. She was a good woman and endured the hardships of early pioneer life with cheerfulness for the sake of her husband and family. She was a kind neighbour, a loving mother and wife and loyal to her friends and bore the respect of all who knew her. Mary Lewis was born in Delaware county, Indiana, Dec. 20,1834. She was married to David Cary, March 31, 1855, and on May 1 the same year came west and located in Mills county, Iowa, where she has ever since resided. To this union were born eight children, seven of whom survive to mourn her loss. They are the sons Charles of Henderson, and Ephraim of this place who has always made his home with her; and Mrs. H. Conrad of Strahan, Mrs. Charles Cunning of Meadow Grove, Nebraska, Mrs. Fred Fisher of Wellington, Colorado, Mrs. Tucker and Mrs. John Edie of Emerson.
