One of Mills County's Oldest Settlers. Uncle David Cary, as he was familiarly called by all who know him passed away at his home in Malvern early Friday morning. His death was not unexpected as he had been very low for the past two weeks. The most of his children and near relatives were with him at or near the close of his life doing all that loving hearts could devise to alleviate his suffering. He was one of the first settlers of this county and was honored and respected by all who knew him. The funeral was held from the Methodist Church Saturday afternoon. Despite the storm, a large number of his old time friends and neighbors came in to attend the last sad rites, testifying to the love and esteem in which he was held. The following obituary was given at the funeral: David Watson Cary was born in Shelby county, Ohio, Nov 9th, 1831. When a child, he removed with his parents to Delaware county, Indiana, where he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Lewis March 31st, 1855. To this union were born two sons and six daughters who with the sorrowing wife survive him to mourn the loss of a good husband and father. He was the youngest of a family of fifteen children and is survived by two sisters. He came to Mills county May 1855 where he has since resided until his removal to Malvern, October 2nd 1899. Although not a professed member of any church at the time of his death, he was a man of exemplary Christian character and bore his severe suffering during his long illness with the greatest patience and said at the beginning of his sickness that "his work was done and he was willing to go when the Lord called for him." He then asked the Lord to bless him and said "he knew He had blessed him and knew He would again." Almost his last conscious words were to ask God to bless the children for the care they had taken of him while sick.
