Daughter of Fred David Brewer and Mary Bertha Clark OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Tuesday, July 21, 1992 LEWIS M. Leona Lewis, daughter of Mary Bertha Clark and Fred Brewer, was born May 17, 1900, in rural Wayne County and passed away July 13, 1992, at the Chariton Manor. She was raised what is known as the "New York" area of Wayne County, and was a member of the New York Christian Church. On February 20, 1920, she was united in marriage to Hollie Robert Lewis, and they farmed near Cambria until his death June 22, 1978. Leona moved to Chariton in 1980. She is survived by three sons and their wives, Rex and Gladys of Marshalltown; Keith and Martha of Stoutland, Mo.; and Vaughn and Joan of Chariton; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three daughters-in-law. The Lewis family farmed three miles east of Cambria and raised Angus cattle. Leona was a past president of the Wayne County Farm Bureau Women and was named Citizen of the Year in 1969. In 1976 she was selected to be an Iowa Master Farm Homemaker. She also devoted much of her time to the American Cancer Society, the Daughters of Union Veterans, American Legion Auxiliary, 4-H, the Corydon Women's Club, the P.T.A., and was active in church and Garden Club activities. Leona loved the farm and gardening, and had a particular interest in flowers and flower arranging. She won numerous awards for her flowers at county and state fairs. Her children and grandchildren were also a source of great happiness and pride. Funeral services were held at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton on Wednesday, July 15, 1992, with the Rev. Jerry Hambleton officiating. Burial was in the New York Cemetery in Wayne County. Serving as bearers were Dennis Brekke, Clark Lewis, Drew Lewis, Greg Lewis, James Lewis, K.C. Lewis, Robert Lewis and Kenneth Newby.
