Description	:	Rex E. Lewis, 94, of Conrad, Iowa passed away Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at the Oakview Nursing Home in Conrad, Iowa, under the care of Compassus Hospice. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, July 12, 2015 at the Union Community Church in Union, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at the Union Community Church. Reverend Dr. Rick Shill and Pastor Tanden Brekke will officiate. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery in Union, IA. Rex Emerson Lewis, son of Hollie Robert and Mary Leona (Brewer) Lewis was born April 22, 1921 at Cambria, Iowa. He graduated from Cambria High School with the class of 1938. After high school Rex attended Iowa State University, graduating in 1942 with a degree in Animal Husbandry and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. Upon graduation he served his country in World War II from 1942 to 1945, attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Lorraine Castle on November 4, 1945 in Joliet, Illinois. They were blessed with four children: James, Laura, Drew and Dawn. Dorothy passed away on November 6, 1964. Rex was later married to Imogene Cavelle Chamness on October 11, 1965 in Union, IA. Imogene passed away on March 9, 1991. On July 13, 1991 he married Gladys Marie Ohrt in Marshalltown, IA. Gladys passed away on September 19, 2008. He spent time living in several communities including: Cambria, Alden, Union, Marshalltown and Conrad, IA. He owned and operated his own farm for 40 years before retiring in 1986. One of the highlights of his life was going on a Freedom Flight. Rex was a longtime Kiwanis member, American Legion member, volunteer at the Veterans Home, and was very active in the Fellowship Baptist Church in Marshalltown, IA. Rex Emerson Lewis was born at his parents’ home and found Christ in his early teens. His life was really his own. He learned what he was and how to live his life during those early years. He was a husband first, marrying three times after losing each partner to passing, a farmer second, farming five different farms from 1947 to 1986; and father third, raising four children on the good life of a farm culture. Rex’s inner peace and satisfaction came from always knowing right from wrong; thus he never questioned the differences between the two. Something few human beings achieve today. And what was he? A strong Christian man who left this world a better place than when he entered it. He will truly be missed by all. Surviving Rex are his children: James (Nancy) Lewis of Colleyville, TX, Laura Newby of Conrad, IA, Drew (Dennise) Lewis of Marshalltown, IA, and Dawn (Dennis) Brekke of Union, IA; step-children, LaVonne Chamness and Fred (Jackie) Ohrt; 16 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; brother, Keith Lewis of Lebanon, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hollie and Leona; spouses, Dorothy, Imogene and Gladys; brother, Vaughn Lewis; and sisters-in-law, Joan Lewis and Marty Lewis. Funeral services for Rex E. Lewis, 94, of Conrad, Iowa were held Sunday, July 12, 2015, at the Union Community Church in Union, IA. Rev. Dr. Rick Shill and Pastor Tanden Brekke Co-Officiated the service. Casket Bearers for the service were Rex's Grandsons: Chris Newby, Jason Lewis, Matt Lewis, Tim Lewis, Kent Lewis, Abhi Brekke, Devi Brekke and Wilson Brekke. Honorary Casket Bearers were Rex's Granddaughters: Shonda Schafer, Kara Newby, Jamie Foster, Jeana Brekke, Aunew Brekke, Devi Brekke and Shouly Brekke. Organist for the service was Carla Gunderson. Burial was held in the Union Cemetery in Union. Military Honors were provided by the Army National Honor Guard Team, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 839 of Marshalltown and by American Legion Posts in the Marshalltown area.
