The memorial mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at St. Anthony's with the Rev. Ralph Steffensmeier officiating. Mary Magdalene Homan was born May 7, 1918, in rural Cedar Rapids to Mary Puetz Homan. John Homan, Mary's father, had been in poor health and died prior to her birth. Mary grew up with her brothers, John and Matt, and sisters, Theresa and Helen, on a farm northwest of Cedar Rapids. When she was 10, Mary, her mother and sisters moved to the farm, where Mary then spent the next 78-and-a-half years. She attended St. Anthony's Parochial School and graduated in 1935 from Cedar Rapids High. She then attended Duchesne Academy in Omaha on a scholarship for Normal training. Mary worked in Omaha for a couple of years as a domestic until Marjorie Van Akeren, a friend, asked her to complete her year of teaching at District 80, south of Primrose, in either 1938 of 1939. Mary then began working at Goering Drug in Cedar Rapids. In June of 1942, Mary moved to Cheyenne, Wyo., to be near a young gentleman by the name of Art Primrose. She again found work cleaning houses. She was united in marriage to Arthur R. Primrose, an Army recruit from Primrose (Neb.), on July 5, 1942, at St. Mary's Cathedral in Cheyenne, by the Rev. James A. Hartmann. When Art was transferred, Mary returned to her home in Cedar Rapids. To this union five children were born: Mary Kathleen, Virginia Louise, Donald John and twins, William George and Sue Ann. Mary and Art raised their family on faith and service to others. Mary continued to help others with painting, cleaning, fixing hair and care giving, until she started working as an office nurse for Dr. Reeder. She continued this until his death and then worked as a teachers aide in Cedar until after her family was raised. Mary was a lifelong member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. She was a member of the Altar Society, where she was a frequent officer and helped organize many of the Catholic school suppers held in the school cafeteria. Mary was one of the original members of the St. Anthony's Quilting Guild, which offered support to the Parish and its endeavors. Mary was also an active member of the Rural Southwest Deanery for many years. Mary was a charter and permanent member of Cedar Rapids Post 44 American Legion Auxiliary. She held various offices at the local, district and state levels and was a delegate to many of the National Legion Auxiliary Conventions throughout the United States. She was a member of LaPetit Salon 410 of the 8 and 40 organization. Mary was active in the Boone County Republican Women and was a part of the election countying board for many years. Mary, along with her sister, Theresa, were Cedar Rapids Chairmen of the country's Bicentennial Celebration. Mary was proud of the fact that she had attended all or nearly all of the Cedar Rapids Alumni celebrations held in August. Mary and Art liked to travel and in doing so visited almost all of the states, including Alaska and Hawaii. They treated their family in yearly vacations. Mary visited Luxemborg, the country from which her grandparents came, and Europe in the company of her sister, Teresa Goering, and sister-in-law Margaret Homan, in 1974. She and Art were repeat travelers to Ireland to visit relatives of Art's. Mary entered Cloverlodge Care Center in late December of 2006. She and her children celebrated her 89th birthday, with those present wearing hats from her collection, on May 7, 2007. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Art Primrose, on Jan. 23, 2006; her parents; brothers, John (Margaret) and Matt (Marcella); a sister, Theresa (LaVern) Goering; and Art's brothers and sisters and their spouses, Myrtle (Charles) Channer; William Primrose, George (Esther) Primrose, Alta Primrose, Jack (Goldie) Primrose, Frank (Olga) Primrose, Donald Primrose, Dale Primrose and Orville Babbitt. Left to remember her are her children, Mary (Wayne) Schapper; Virginia (Bill) Wallace, Don (Ginny) Primrose, Bill (Joan) Primrose, Sue (Ken) McIntyre; grandchildren, Maura Schapper; Carolyn Schapper, Elizabeth Wallace, Cynthia Wallace, Cindy Lake, Megan (Ryan) Nelson, JJ (Kristen) McIntyre, Sheryl (Roy) Serrano; great-grandchildren, Maxwell Schapper, Kori, Rori and Camden Serrano and Regan Hansen; a sister, Helen and brother-in-law, Ambrose Wlaschin, sisters-in-law, Mae Babbitt, Virginia Primrose and Alice Primrose; and many nieces and nephews.
