Born Dec. 7, 1915, in rural Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of Thomas Michael and Anna Margaret Smith Burns . On June 17, 1938, she married Henry John Mertens in Davenport. He died Feb. 21, 1945. Mrs. Mertens attended Pleasant Grove Country School and graduated from St. Alphonsus High School. Following graduation, she attended Woodard Business School in Burlington. She began working in 1947 for Federal Land Bank as a secretary for 15 years, then for 10 years at the ASCS office. She then bought the Mount Pleasant Travel Agency, which she operated for 11 years before retiring. She was a lifelong resident of Mount Pleasant, where she was active in many organizations. She joined the American Legion Auxiliary in 1945 and served as president for many years. She also was a 50-year charter member of Beta Sigma Phi. Other organizations include the Horticulture Club, South Center Club and Bridge Club, and she served as an ambassador for the Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce. She was a lifelong member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, where she belonged to the Daughters of Isabella and the Altar and Rosary Society. Her hobbies included bowling and golfing at Mount Pleasant Golf and Country Club. Survivors include one daughter, and one son {names omitted for privacy}; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Tom Burns Jr. of Carlsbad, N.M. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, one sister and two sisters in infancy. Visitation will be from 12 to 7 p.m. Monday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, where family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A Christian vigil service will be at 6 p.m., and the Rosary will be recited following the vigil service. The funeral Mass for Mrs. Mertens will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gary Beckman officiating. Burial will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Memorials have been established to Henry County Relay for Life, Fellowship Cup and American Legion Auxiliary, for the children of military personnel.
