Paul Thomas Burns was born on February 15, 1917, in Mt. Pleasant, IA, the son of Tom M. and Anna M. Smith Burns . He grew up in Mt. Pleasant and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1935. On May 12, 1942, he married Catherine M. Jacobs at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant. Paul was inducted into the United States Army on July 2, 1942, at Ft. Des Moines, IA. He served for three and one half years in the European Theater during WWII. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his service to his country. Following his military service, he was employed for over thirty years with the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant as a procurator for the Atomic Energy Commission. The Burns lived in Middletown following their marriage, and later moved to Danville in the late 1960s, where they have made their home ever since. Paul was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and later joined the St. Paul Catholic Church in Burlington where he was a member for over 60 years. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He loved to garden, grow flowers and feed the wildlife. His greatest love was to spend time with his family. Survivors include his wife, Catherine, of Danville, IA; three daughters, and one son; one sister; one brother; a daughter-in-law; a sister-in-law and a brother-in-law {Names omitted for privacy} . Also surviving are six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren {names omitted for privacy}. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Karen Burns , a son, Jim Burns , one sister, Kathleen Canella, and by one brother Bob Burns .
