Mary Martha (Andera) Soukup was born on August 6, 1928, on a farm between Spillville and Protivin, the daughter of Albert and Frances (Humpal) Andera. She was the tenth of thirteen children, and attended Spillville schools as a child. On April 21, 1948, she married James C. Soukup at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, and they made their home on a farm northwest of Spillville in Sumner Township. In addition to raising four children, Mary was a full partner in the farm’s operation, which included dairy and beef cattle, hogs, and laying hens over the years. Mary and James retired from farming in 1989 and shortly thereafter moved to a home they built in Decorah. While in Decorah, Mary volunteered at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital and at the Barthell Eastern Star Home. Survivors include her husband of over 63 years, James, Decorah, IA; four children; ten grandchildren; three brothers: Matt Andera, Calmar, IA; Willie Andera, Lawler, IA; and Larry Andera, Decorah, IA; twelve great-grandsons, one brother-in-law and three sisters-in-law. Mary was preceded in death by her parents: Albert and Frances (Humpal) Andera; one granddaughter, Annette Kriener; three sisters: Adella (Carl) Peterson; Frances (Leonard) Hageman; and Marcella (Ed) Hayek; six brothers: Edward (Helen) Andera; Louis Andera; Albert Andera; Robert Andera; Frank (Georgina) Andera; and Cyril Andera (in infancy).
