A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 29, 2013 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Nick March officiating. Burial will be held at Holy Trinity Cemetery with Military Rites accorded by the American Legion Post 605 of Protivin. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, April 28, 2013, at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home 123 North Main St. in Protivin, Iowa. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Born October 13, 1930 to Albert and Frances(Humpal) Andera on the farm in Winneshiek County between Spillville and Protivin. He was the 11th of 13 children. He attended Spillville schools until the 8th grade, where he was the only boy in his class of 8. Willie enlisted in the Navy in October 1950. He then went to San Diego, California for boot training, and joined Carrier Task Force operating in Korean Waters for six months as an Aviation technician on the USS The Essex. He returned to Moffet Field, California and later made two more trips to Korean Waters for 9 and 14 Months each. He was discharged at Treasure Island, California as AM2 in August of 1954. Willie met Mary Ann Fencl at the Inwood Ballroom in Spillville, while on leave, 10 months before he was discharged. The two were married on August 24, 1954 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They moved to California where Willie was an airplane mechanic. They lived there until Willie's father Albert mailed them a letter saying they needed to come home to help on the family farm. They made their home west of Protivin where they raised six children. Willie and Mary Ann raised Angus beef cattle, corn, beans and hay. Willie received an Outstanding Conservation Farmer award in 1977 presented by Howard Soil Conservation District. Willie worked part time at Clet Koshatka Farm Equipment and Fencl Oil & LP Company as a mechanic. Willie was a proud member of the KC's and American Legion Post 605, Protivin, Iowa. Willie enjoyed taking a dip in the family pond after a long day of bailing hay or fieldwork, fishing, cracking walnuts, and was an avid reader. He loved the outdoors, along with his family and their children. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mary Ann. Children: Sally (Gary) Wichman, Gilbertville, IA, Deborah (Paul) Schaefer, Waterloo, IA ; Kenneth (Jeri) Andera, Cresco, IA, Sandra (Pete) Schrandt, Cambria, WI ,Cynthia (John) Pitulla, Stillwater, MN, Patrick Andera, Austin MN and 21 Grandchildren; Lisa (Matt) Abbas, Christopher Wichman, Adam (Laura) Schaefer, Anne Schaefer, Allison (Kyle) Ramaker, Aaron and Aimee Schaefer; Benjamin, Mark, Matthew, John Andera; Sullivan, Clayton, Simon, Cooper, Olive Schrandt; Angus, Ryan Pitulla, Justin( Whitnei) Abel, Bethany and Nicholas Andera and 3 Great Grandchildren; Claire and Natalie Schaefer, Coen Abel, and baby Andera due June 2013. Two brothers; Matt (Darlene)Andera, Spillville, IA; Larry Andera, Decorah, IA Three sisters -in-law: Doris Andera, Ft. Atkinson, IA; Grace Andera and Janet Andera both of Cresco. Brother-in- Law; Jim Soukup of Decorah,IA Willie was preceded in death by his parents: Albert and Frances (Humpal) Andera, Four sisters Adella (Carl) Peterson; Frances (Leonard) Hageman; Marcella (Ed) Hayek, Mary Soukup; six brothers: Edward (Helen) Andera; Albert Andera; Louis Andera; Frank (Georgina) Andera; Cyril Andera (in infancy); Robert Andera.
