Read More	Highland Recorder November 30, 1934 MRS. D. E. COLAW In the passing of “Aunt Mary,” Mrs. Davy E. Colaw, the Recorder readers are shocked, community saddened and Recorder staff crippled. For approximately a quarter of a century, “Aunt Mary” has reported the Crabbottom news, through the columns of the Recorder until a few years ago, when an additional correspondent was put on and she took over the Key Run section of Crabbottom. Only a newspaper reporter or correspondent can adequately appreciate the work of Mrs. Colaw. With a faithfulness and loyalty to both paper and community, she endeavored always to raise the standard by her own honest thinking and courage in defending the right and to discharge her duty toward each from week to week. She made use of every opportunity to praise and compliment the Recorder; her fidelity to her home paper was very strong. She had never been known by us to murmur, complain or criticized. Her letters upon a few occasions had been crowded out due to lack of space or time or slightly changed and when explained “A loyal and an understanding smile" was the only come-back. Mrs. Colaw appreciated the “finer things of life” as indicated by her enjoyment of music, flowers, and the presence of little children, possessing a sympathetic feeling for the less fortunate. Her recognition of her Creator and all things created were paramount and references to Him were frequently noticed between her lines. In referring to church services attended, she always spoke of returning home re-freshened, made happy & glad by the message & singing She never omitted telling how much she had enjoyed the fellowship of being with her friends upon such occasions. The Recorder office and Editor’s home have been brightened and encouraged by many visits of Mrs. Colaw. At this time we would join a host of friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved family. We feel, we are voicing the sentiment of our family of readers in expressing their sincere regret as well. She was a daughter of Ambrose and Katherine (Hammer) Meadows. Her father was killed during the "War Between thee States” & she with her twin sister and one brother nine days old with their mother were left. Her twin sister, Mrs. Phebe Byrd, departed this life 36 years ago & the brother, Ambrose Meadows of Ruddle W. Va., survives. The deceased was married to David E. Colaw March 20, 1880 and to this union nine children were born. Those surviving are, Walter A., George E. Ben. H. of Crabbottom, Cyrus of California & Henry of Beaverton, Oregon. Three daughters, Mrs. Ada Bell Hammer, Hazel & Ruth Colaw and one son, John W. have preceded her to the grave. Daughter of Ambrose & Katherine (Hammer) Meadows. Married David E. Colaw on March 30, 1880.
