Read More	Highland Recorder February 2, 1940 DEATH OF A GOOD WOMAN Mrs. Ida (Colaw) Fitzwater of St. George, Tucker Co., West Virginia died of heart disease Janualy 24, 1940 at the General Hospital at Parsons, W. Va., where she was a patient one week. She was born Nov. 16, 1872 and was a daughter of the late Andrew J. and Catherine (Hammer-Meadows) Colaw. Her mother, having died before she was four years old she was reared by her half-sister, Phebe Meadows, later Mrs. John W. Byrd and her younger sister, Emma was reared by the other half-sister, Mary Meadows, later Mrs. David E. Colaw, and these two young women cared for the motherless infants as though they were their own children. Their mother, a daughter of the late George and Mary (Harper) Hammer was first married to Ambrose Meadows, Sr., who was killed in the Civil War in May 1862 and his wife was left with three small children, Phebe, Mary and Ambrose, After nine years she was married to Andrew J. Colaw and lived at Crabbottom until her death, August 19, 1876. In February 1892, Miss Ida C. Colaw and Mr. Robert Fitzwater were united in marriage and traveled life's pathway together until his death, May 9, 1936. Soon after they were married they moved to St. George, W. Va., where they made their home and reared their nine children, all surviving, as follows: Mrs. Sallie Stalnaker of Morgantown, Miss Sadie Fitzwater of Hillard, W. Va., Miss Edna Fitzwater of Englewood, California, Mrs. Mabel Simons, of Narrows, Va., Mrs. Edith Scott, of Yuma, Arizona; Ira of Dayton, Ohio and Ernest, Lloyd and Roy of St. George, West Virginia. All of the children except Edith and Edna came home for the funeral. Others surviving are eleven grand children and one great grand child,, one full sister, Mrs. Emma Nelson of Crabbottom, one half-brother, Ambrose Meadows of Ruddle, West Virginia and one uncle, George W. Hammer, Franklin, W. Va., who is now in his 96th year, and a large number of cousins nieces and nephews in both Pendleton and Highland counties. Since early childhood, Mrs. Fitzwater was a member of the Methodist church and lived a devoted, Christian life. Funeral services were conducted at Parsons on Saturday by her pastor, Rev. K. M. Scott and in accordance with her request, her remains were brought to her childhood community for interment, where services were held Sunday at twelve o'clock by Rev. George E. Pope of the Methodist church and her body was laid to rest in the Crabbottom cemetery.
