People advised her not to marry S. P. Yoder because he had spent two years in bed and six months at a water cure. They said he would never be strong enough to farm and do hard labor. But Mary went ahead with her wedding for a marriage that lasted 46 years and had five children: J. Harvey, Amanda, Alice, Ella and Homer. One reason Mary and S.P. moved to Virginia was for more opportunity for church work. Mary helped organize a sewing circle and one feature was that any one of the circle could have a meeting at her house to sew for her for a dollar a day. At the close of the day, Mary would stuff unfinished garments into her bag saying, "Well, I am president; I'll finish these at home." Mary was never aggressive or pushy, but rose to the challenges of each situation. She got tuberculosis in her 70's, but recovered to live five more years, outliving S.P. by 4 1/2 years.
