Yoder was born to Jacob and Anna (Yoder) Yoder on August 6, 1847, in Port Royal, Juniata County, Pennsylvania, one of 13 children--11 of whom survived to adulthood. S. P. married Mary Metzler, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Burkholder) Metzler, who was also one of 13 children. They were married on October 4, 1880 in Mahoning County, Ohio. Children: John Harvey, Amanda May, Mabel, Ella Elizabeth and Homer Alan.
