Description	:	Mary O'Leary Butcher Monk, the daughter of Michael and Elizabeth (Clary) O'Leary, was born 25 March 1830 in County Wexford, Ireland. Mary's father, born in Wexford, was a stone mason and general mechanic. Her mother, also born in Ireland, died about 1835 at the age of 28 leaving her husband to raise 5 year old Mary and her 9 year old brother William. Both of the parents were Roman Catholic. Read More	Mary O'Leary Butcher Monk, the daughter of Michael and Elizabeth (Clary) O'Leary, was born 25 March 1830 in County Wexford, Ireland. Mary's father, born in Wexford, was a stone mason and general mechanic. Her mother, also born in Ireland, died about 1835 at the age of 28 leaving her husband to raise 5 year old Mary and her 9 year old brother William. Both of the parents were Roman Catholic. The 20th of August 1852 at Waterford, Mary boarded the ship Alert under the command of Capt Burke. She landed at Quebec the 27th of October. From there she went to New York City to reunite with her brother who had immigrated earlier and was employed as a ships carpenter. Upon her arrival in New York City, she found that William had died of cholera the very same day she left Ireland. He is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Williamsburg, New York. After three months in New York, she moved to Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo County, Michigan where she met and married Edmond Butcher on 9 April 1855. The ceremony was performed by Squire Deacons. There they had three children; Frederick born 28 December 1856 George born 27 October 1860 Robert born 17 September 1863 In 1866 the family moved to Monona County, Iowa and settled down to life on their farm. 18 August 1873 Mary and Edmond separated, divided their property and Mary applied for a Bill of Divorce. She was married again in Monona County 19 February 1887 to Edwin Monk. The ceremony was performed by the Reverand C.N. Lyman. Edwin was born 16 December 1840 in Maucopin County, Illinois. It was said that Mary "brought up her family to be honored and respected men and they enjoy the esteem of the whole community. ********* The History of Monona County, Iowa published in 1890 by the National Publishing Company of Chicago.
