Description	:	California Democrat, July 16, 2014 Mary Pauline "Penny" Steiner, 89, of California, MO passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at her residence. Penny was born on August 3, 1924 near Bunceton, MO the daughter of Edmund Frank Herndon and Tracy Putnam Herndon both of whom preceded her in death. She was a 1942 graduate of Jamestown High School. Penny was united in marriage on April 22, 1944, in New Bern, NC, to Roy Lee Steiner who preceded her in death on October 31, 2002. Penny was born on August 3, 1924 near Bunceton, MO the daughter of Edmund Frank Herndon and Tracy Putnam Herndon both of whom preceded her in death. She was a 1942 graduate of Jamestown High School. Penny was united in marriage on April 22, 1944, in New Bern, NC, to Roy Lee Steiner who preceded her in death on October 31, 2002. She and Roy lived in Missouri, South Dakota, Montana, Oklahoma and California while he worked for the Federal Highway Administration. They retired to their home in California, MO, in 1977. Penny was a homemaker and member of the St. Paul's Evangelical Church in Jamestown. She was an exquisite seamstress and made many fine quilts for family and friends. She enjoyed creating beautiful gardens around her home. Survivors include, one granddaughter, Joayne Melo of Turlock, CA; two great-granddaughters, Megan and Rebecka Miranda both of Turlock, CA; one special cousin, Don Putnam and wife Fran of Columbia, MO; a brother-in-law, Harold Steiner and wife Sheila of Kenai, AK; nieces, nephews, and a host of loving friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son Michael Roy Steiner in 1973, who was killed in a plane crash in McGrath, AK; a brother, Roy Ed Herndon, who was killed in action in WWII, and three sisters, Mildred Snead, Hazel Seward, and Helen Smith. Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at the funeral home. Officiating will be Pastor Brian Bish. Burial will be at the California Masonic Cemetery. Commencing in 2006, Penny partnered with Eric Lange in an annual project to raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Penny's role was to solicit contributions; Eric's to pedal his bike in the Gateway MS Bike Ride. The family requests that memorials be directed to the final fund raising by Penny for this cause. The 2014 MS Bike Ride will occur September 6-7, and Eric has dedicated this ride in memory of Roy and Penny Steiner. Contributions may be made to the National MS Society c/o Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, 100 S. Oak St. California, MO 65018. Arrangements are under the direction of Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, California, MO.
