JOHNSON Mary Parthena (Perthenia) Bliss, daughter of Louis and Sarah Bliss, entered this life December 3, 1863, at Seneca, Kansas, and departed it at her home in Randolph, Iowa, at 3:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, July 24, 1940, at the age of 76 years, 7 months and 21 days. While a young girl she came with her parents to Iowa where they first resided near Bedford, later coming to Randolph where the family made their home. On May 14, 1882, she was united in marriage with Thomas A. Livingston at Randolph and the following four years they made their home on a farm east of this place. They then removed to Nebraska and located on a farm near Lyons in Burt county for two years, and the following year lived in Decatur, also in Burt county, after which they lived on a farm near Tekamah, Nebraska, later moving to Tekamah where they made their home until the death of Mr. Livingston, which occurred on December 30, 1919. To Mr. and Mrs. Livingston were born eight children, two daughters and six sons - William Lewis of Tekamah, Nebraska; George Albert of Vancouver, Washington; Roy James of Los Angeles, California; Wayne Clark of Dallas, Texas; and Sarah Jeanette (now Mrs. Elmer N. Amick,) of Council Bluffs, Iowa, all of whom survive; and Harry Jacob and Thomas Irwin, both of whom died in early childhood, and one daughter, Charity Alice Livingston, Eby of Belden, Nebraska, who preceded her mother in death about 14 years ago. After Mr. Livingston's death she continued her residence in Tekamah two years before returning to Randolph where she married Mr. W. C. Johnston in 1921, who died two years later following an injury. Mrs. Johnston continued her residence here the remainder of her life. Besides the living members of her own family she is survived by one brother, Robert Bliss of Randolph, and one sister, Mrs. Emma Smith, of Redwood, California; 16 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. While residing in the vicinity of Tekamah, Nebraska, she united with the Riverside Baptist church north of that place and continued in that faith. She was an active worker in the Royal Neighbors of America and kept up her membership in that organization, and was also a member in good standing in the Rebekah lodge, No. 368 at Randolph, and of the American Legion Auxiliary of Randolph. She was a great lover of flowers and of doing fancy needlework until failing health forced her to abandon that work. She greatly enjoyed working in the various organizations to which she belonged and was always a kind neighbor and her generosity was limited only by her means. The happiest moments of her life was when administering help and consolation to the needy and sick regardless of sacrifice to herself. It was while on one such mission that she suffered an injury from which she never fully recovered and which contributed largely to the suffering she so stoically bore the last years of her life. Funeral services were held at Tekamah, Nebraska, Friday afternoon and the internment was made in the Livingston family plot in the cemetery at that place. On request of Mrs. Johnston, previous to her death, the following poem was read at the services: Shed No Tears for Me "Do not weep o'er me when I am dead. But smile instead, Happily and safely I shall lie Hidden from all the storms that may pass by. The tender grass will whisper over head The warm earth fold itself about my bed. Do not weep for me when I am dead. Do not weep, I would not have you sad, I'd have you to be glad. And when no helping word may speak Some better comforter I'd have you seek. I'd have you smile and shed not any tears, For I shall be at rest and free from fears. Do not weep, yours should be happy years. Do not weep, but in your memory deep One little thought of me tenderly keep Through that last sleep While I sleep dreaming not."
