Description	:	Joe Wanek and Mary Planansky were married November 15, 1884, and in 1886 moved to Box Butte near Lawn Church area. Joe and Mary both were born in Czechoslovakia. He was postmaster for 12 years at Lawn Post Office. He taught school, worked on the grade and track as the Burlington RR moved into the county. In fact, there wasn't much he hasn't had a hand in some time or another. He was on the County Board when the Court House was built, and his name appears on the marble slab in the present Court House. He also helped build... Read More	Joe Wanek and Mary Planansky were married November 15, 1884, and in 1886 moved to Box Butte near Lawn Church area. Joe and Mary both were born in Czechoslovakia. He was postmaster for 12 years at Lawn Post Office. He taught school, worked on the grade and track as the Burlington RR moved into the county. In fact, there wasn't much he hasn't had a hand in some time or another. He was on the County Board when the Court House was built, and his name appears on the marble slab in the present Court House. He also helped build the first bridge in Box Butte County. The bridge was a 60 foot wooden span across the Niobrara River. It was a stage and freight route from Sidney to the Black Hills via Fort Robinson. This bridge was fastened together with wooden pegs because there was no money to buy nails. While working on this bridge, Joe walked to work which was 8 miles, and home again at night. Total cost of the bridge was $42.00. Joe Wanek also walked to Sterling, Colorado and Silverton, Colorado, which is 500 miles from Alliance. He worked in a mine at Silverton.] Sons, William, Joe and Louie, all had homesteads in Wyoming, Converse county, Lost Springs area, which is west of Lusk, Wyoming. Minnie and her husband Joe Bartos, also were homesteaders in the same area. Louie Andrew Wanek married Ella Blanche Barta, October 26, 1915, their being the first marriage in the Lawn Church with Father Kaiser performing the ceremony. They traveled to their homestead in Wyoming by team and wagon. A baby boy, Wilmer Joseph passed away in infancy and is buried in Lawn Cemetery. Provided by contributor Larry Ciet
