She was born on April 17, 1909 in Weir, Kansas, the daughter of A.W. and Nellie (Lochead) Roy. At the age of nine, she moved with her family to Fort Scott. She attended schools in Fort Scott, graduating from Fort Scott High School in the "Class of 1926". She graduated from Pittsburg State Teachers College (now Pittsburg State University) in 1930, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health and Physical Education. Read More	******************************************* Published June 21, 2004 - Chanute, KS Mary Roy Burris, 95, of Chanute, Kansas, passed away Saturday, June 19, 2004 at her home. She was born on April 17, 1909 in Weir, Kansas, the daughter of A.W. and Nellie (Lochead) Roy. At the age of nine, she moved with her family to Fort Scott. She attended schools in Fort Scott, graduating from Fort Scott High School in the "Class of 1926". She graduated from Pittsburg State Teachers College (now Pittsburg State University) in 1930, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health and Physical Education. She was united in marriage to Bruce H. Burris on June 18, 1939, in Fort Scott, Kansas. He preceded her in death on May 28, 1998. The summer of 1930 she taught at the University, then taught Health and Physical Education in Chanute High School and Junior High School. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Art and Literature Club, and the PEO. She served ten years as trustee on the Board of Neosho County Community College. She also served on the Chanute Recreation Commission, the State of Kansas Lung Association and the Library Board. She organized the first swimming school in southeast Kansas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Burris; her parents; a sister, Elma; and a brother-in-law, Harlan Lee. Funeral services will be Friday, June 25, 2004, at the Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Shelly Holle officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Chanute, KS. Memorials in her name may be made to the Presbyterian Church and may be left with the funeral home. Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel of Chanute is in charge of arrangements. ***************************************
