Banther & Mary Ann [Nanney] Banther Wife of Lawson MacKell Grice married September 30, 1856 Rutherford Co., NC Jane Banther, a descendant of the Royal Nanny line of Wales, a descendant of early American ministers and preachers, one of which was Rev John Wheelwright, was practical as many wives and mothers in the Blue Ridge Mountains, she knew the herbs to gather for her family, and how to use them. Banther & Mary Ann [Nanney] Banther Wife of Lawson MacKell Grice married September 30, 1856 Rutherford Co., NC Jane Banther, a descendant of the Royal Nanny line of Wales, a descendant of early American ministers and preachers, one of which was Rev John Wheelwright, was practical as many wives and mothers in the Blue Ridge Mountains, she knew the herbs to gather for her family, and how to use them. She grew flax for making linen cloth, and carded fleece from their sheep, then she'd weave the strands into cloth on the loom. Discarded garments or scraps of cloth were made into bed quilts. When her menfolk would gather the hogs that had been running in the woods all summer fattening on acorns, she'd prepare hams, sausages, and chittlins for her family. She made her own bread which was most often cornbread or cornpones after they'd bring cornmeal from the mill a couple of miles away. They kept geese from which she'd gather feathers and down to make pillows. They used rope across a bed frame and covered that with mattress ticks filled with corn shucks. When one of the boys 'spied a Bee Tree' she'd make beeswax candles, but other times used tallow for candles or lighting. With so much hard work, one of her favorite times was gathering at the Church for worship when her family would raise their voices in worship singing "Where the Soul Of Man Never Dies." She rededicated her life to a deeper walk with Christ at one of her son Wash Grice's revival meetings in Georgia. And one day out in Oklahoma, the Lord called her over to that land Where the Soul Never Dies. And Jane Banther Grice, a daughter of the King, gladly crossed over in answer to His Call.
