She was one of the six children born to John Stevenson (who was born 20 June 1810 in Kirkowswald, Ayrshire Scotland to James Stevenson and his wife Margaret Blair) and his wife Isabella Hastings (born 27 March 1815 in Carsphairn, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.) At the death of her parents, Mary went to live with her maternal grandparents, William Hastings and his wife Isabella Sharpe. Mary Stevenson was married to Thomas Barrett (son of Samuel Barrett and his wife Agnes Turner). The marriage took place 25 March 1870 at New Cumnock, Aryshire, Scotland. The couple and their infant daughter left Scotland and came to the United States in the later part of 1870 or in 1871. They resided in the states of Pennsylvania, Illinois, Iowa and came to settle in Hand County. The Barretts were parents of 13 children, nine of which were; Isabella, Samuel, John, Thomas Jr., David, Agnes, Jessie, Flora, and Mary S. Barrett. Mary died February 10, 1918 at Boulder, Colorado and was buried February 13, 1918 at G.A.R. cemetery in Miller. Her grave is marked with a headstone from the Black Hills but has no inscription on it as the grave was vandalized. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mrs. Thos Barrett Miss Mary Stevenson was born in Scotland April 8, 1850. Her parents died while she was small and she made her home with relatives until 1870 when she was united in marriage to Thomas Barrett. The same year he came to America seeking a home, she following later. They first settled in Poweltown, Pa. In 1876 they moved to Illinois and in 1881 to Lucas, Iowa. In 1884 they came to S. D. and took up land in Mondamin township, Hand County and since that time Mrs. Barrett has been a resident of South Hand county, except three years spent in Colorado. Mr. Barrett died April 11th, 1905. Mrs. Barrett came to her death at Boulder, Col., where she was spending the winter, on February 10th, 1918, after an attack of pneumonia, age 67 years, 10 months and 2 days.
