MARY CAMPBELL BIRD Death came peacefully Sunday afternoon, Dec. 22, at one o’clock to Mrs. Mary Campbell Bird in St. Luke’s Hospital, Richmond, due to complications, following a serious hip injury when she fell about her household duties in her Monterey home Dec. 7. Following the accident she was taken at once to the hospital, where her condition had been reported favorable, but death came suddenly. She was born Nov. 4, 1868, a daughter of the late Thomas Campbell and Mrs. Susan Gum-Wade Campbell. She had several half brothers and sisters, among them being Isobel Moore, Adella Wade (the mother of E. A. Wade, H. A. Wade and Mrs. Florence Fleisher), and Austin Campbell who was the father of the late Walter Campbell, well known in Highland County. She was a descendant of pioneer settlers of the Bath-Highland border. The ancestral home of the Campbells was destroyed by fire not many years ago, after being in the Lightner family for a number of years. After the formation of Highland county in 1848, Thomas Campbell was named county surveyor, and served in this capacity 1848-1858. In 1889 she was happily married to George Anson Bird, who died June 8, 1937. To this union one son was born, Lloyd Campbell Bird, a resident of Richmond, member of the business firm of Phipps & Bird, Inc., and prominently connected with the business affairs of that city. A first cousin, W. Price Campbell, is a resident of Churchville. The Campbell and Bird families have through the years been prominently connected with the affairs of business and church. During the life of Mr. Bird, the home on Back Creek, in the Valley Center community, was known for its genuine hospitality, the home of the itinerant Methodist preacher and others. Following the death of Mr. Bird, Mrs. Bird became a resident of Monterey, establishing a home, and at once becoming interested in the affairs of the community, especially in church work and other worthwhile undertakings. She united with the Methodist church in early life, and, during her long life, lived an exemplary christian life. For many years she was a teacher in the Sunday school in her home church; had served as an officer in many of the societies of the church; for many years was a member of the Woman’s Missionary society, while at the formation of the new society, the Woman’s Society of Christian Service, she enrolled as one of the charter members, and was made an officer in this organization. She was a member of the Highland Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and other societies of like nature. In all these she manifested a keen interest; gave freely of her time and talents; possessing many of the Christian virtues -love, sympathy, kindness, and others -that go to make the well-rounded character. She had many friends, to whom she was devoted. She ministered freely to the sick and needy. Immediately following her death, the body was taken to the Sutherland funeral home in Richmond, where it reposed until early Tuesday morning, when the funeral cortege journeyed for Monterey, arriving about eleven-thirty. The body was placed in the Monterey Methodist church, and remained in state until the hour of funeral services Tuesday afternoon at 1 o’clock being in charge of her pastor, the Rev. D. G. Drent, assisted by the Rev. A. E. Johnson, pastor of the Monterey Presbyterian church, the Rev. C. B. Gibbs, retired minister of the Brethren church and the Rev. L. M. Moffett, pastor of the McDowell Presbyterian church. As requested, the same hymns and the same scripture reading were used as that used at the funeral services of her husband, the late George Anson Bird, who died June 8, 1937. With Mrs. R. C. Jones in charge of the music, the choir sang the hymns, “How Firm a Foundation” and “Rock of Ages.” The same duet was used as at the service of Mr. Bird, “In the Garden,” by Mrs. Robert Sterrett, and Mrs. McCoy. Mr. Trent read from the ritual of the church, Mr. Gibbs the 91st psalm, and Mr. Johnson offered the prayer. Mr. Trent read the 23rd Psalm, and the first eighteen verses of the 14th chapter of St. John. Mr. Moffett, for many years an intimate friend of the family and of the deceased, spoke feelingly of these associations and paid tribute to her life and character. Following the service here, the remains were taken to Green Hill on Back Creek and laid to rest in the family plot in the beautiful cemetery that overlooks the valley, where many years of her life were lived.
