Highland Recorder June 11, 1937 ANSON BIRD WELL KNOWN COUNTRY GENTLEMAN DIES In the death of George Anson Bird, 74, who died Tuesday afternoon, June 8, at two o’clock, at his home at Valley Center, (near Mill Gap) the county of Highland j has lost a citizen, who for long years has been identified with its best and finest interests. But not alone in the channels of business were his enrigies directed, but in his everyday home life, and in his church, having served as steward, Sunday School superintendent and lay leader. He was born at Valley Center, May 27, 1863, fifth child of the late George Hull Bird and Matilda Wade Bird, and spent his entire life in that vicinity, excepting only a few years, when he resided at Churchville. On June 12, 1889 he was married to Miss Mary S. Campbell, who survives him. His passing interrupted by four days, a period of forty-eight years of romance unbroken. They were happy mates in the evening just as they had been at dawn. One son, survives, Dr. Lloyd C. Byrd, professionally well known in Richmond, who with his wife, Mrs. Lucille Bird were present when he passed away. One grandson, George Campbell Bird survives. One brother, David O. Bird, very closely associated all through life with this country gentleman, and who lives on an adjoining estate, survives. He was preceded to the grave by two brothers Charles and Harmon Bird, two sisters, Mrs. Robert Lightner and Mrs. S. B. Rexrode; a half-brother, Morgan Bird, three half-sisters, Mrs. J. F. Clendenen, Mrs. H. P. McLaughlin and Mrs. Esteline Bird. Mr. Bird was for more than half a century a central figure in the religious, political and social life of Valley Center community, where his home was recognized for its gracious hospitality. He was prominently identified with farming, but more particularly with cattle raising. He had been a devout and consecrated member of Rehobeth Church since 1890, having united with this church under the ministry of Rev. R. S. Cunningham. He had meant a great blessing to his church, through his ministry of music, possessing a good voice. He frequently sang on sacred occasions with the Bird Quartet, in Monterey, as well as in other places. Unonstentatious in his mode of living, he possessed a personality which held fast a large number of devoted friendships, and in his dealings, he evidenced an honest and sympathetic heart and a desire to render aid to others. One outstanding attribute of his splendid character was his decided convictions for the finer things of life. The impressive rites of the Methodist Episcopal Church will be read by the Rev. J. H. Light, Thursday afternoon at two o’clock at Green Hill Church assisted by the Rev. DeWitt A. Beery of Alderson, W. Va. former preacher on the Monterey charge; Rev. A. Loring Howell and Rev. A. E. Johnson. Complying to a request made by Mr. Bird, Mrs. R. C. Jones was in charge of the music, with Mrs. Martha Sterrett and Mrs. Mabel McCoy singing his favorite hymn: 'In The Garden.’ Interment will take place in the cemetery nearby.
