Aunt Mary, as she was generally known, was 83 years, 3 months and 7 days old, and was the wife of Capt. James R. Mason, who is 87 years of age. She was born in this community May 5th, 1859, the daughter of the late William Ward and Maria Nelson Ward, both of whom also were Somerset countians, and members of families who settled here in the early days and did much to help develop the farming and seafood industries, were leaders in social and religious work, and also played important political roles in by-gone days. A very lovable character, Aunt Mary was widely known and highly esteemed. She had always been an energetic woman, and like her fore-bearers, early became connected with the Methodist church and found many opportunities to help in the work there. She was one of the finest and best wife and mother, as can be attested by the age of her husband with who she lived so long, an the six fine sons she has left behind, and who, while they have with but one exception settled in other parts of the country, will miss this woman of sterling character and sweet disposition whom it was their wont to visit and love and advise with whenever occasion permitted. Funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon, at 2:00 o'clock, at her home, with the pastor of Asbury Methodist Church, Rev. J. T. Rowlenson, officiating. Interment will be in Asbury cemetery. She is survived by her husband and these sons: James H., George M., Norman, and William P. Mason, of Hampton, Va., and Paul Mason, of this city.
