Polly Couch Bowman, widely known and beloved minister of the Friends church, died at 9:45 o'clock Tuesday night at her home in Hemlock. "Mrs. Bowman, affectionately known to hundreds of persons throughout this region as ‘Aunt Polly,' had been seriously ill since last November, suffering with a complication of diseases. The regard in which she was held was manifested in the deep concern shown for her in her illness. "She was a minister of the Society of Friends and served as pastor of the Hazel Dell Friends church for many years, retiring a few years ago but carrying on actively wherever needed. She had officiated at many weddings and funerals, the exact record of which is not known. "Surviving are the husband, Oscar Bowman, and a foster daughter, Miss Mary Alice Bowman, a teacher in the Sharpsville schools. Her first husband, William Couch, died about 20 years ago. "Many years ago Mr. and Mrs. Bowman took into their home a little girl, Ratie Hickman, to whom ‘Aunt Polly' gave a mother's care. She married, then died leaving two small daughters who then were taken and lovingly reared by their mother's foster mother. They are Mrs. Clarence Butler of Tipton and Mrs. Morris Gross of Kokomo. Judge Dan White of Indianapolis, a cousin, is the only known blood relative surviving. "The body will be returned to the residence in Hemlock, where Mr. and Mrs. Bowman had lived seven years, at 6 o'clock Wednesday evening. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Windfall Methodist church. The Rev. Clarence Ozier, pastor of the Hemlock Friends church, will be in charge assisted by the Rev. James Hickman of the Hazel Dell church. The body will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Brookside cemetery at Windfall. "Besides the Hazel Dell church, the Rev. Mrs. Bowman had served as pastor at Curtisville and other churches of her faith, being in the ministry over a long period of years. She was instrumental in organizing the Hazel Dell Homecoming association 36 years ago and has been the president since that time. "Mrs. Bowman was born Mary Virginia White, daughter of Robert and Betty White, on November 2, 1858. Her parents were among the early settlers of Tipton county and practically all her life had been spent in the same community, where she will be long remembered for her good life."
