Gary Grundman of the Federated Church officiating. Survivors include a son, Stanley E. Davis of Turlock; a daughter, Vee Hooper of Patterson; and four grandchildren. The family requests that remembrances be sent to the American Cancer Society. She had lived most of her life in Patterson after being born in Anderson, Indiana. Her parents, John H. and Estella Evans, ware both involved in the telephone industry prior to moving to Newman in 1909. There her father was the telephone company manager. In 1912 the senior Evans organized the Evans Telephone Company in the new community of Patterson, starting with 40 subscribers and 12 miles of aerial wire. His daughter Virginia assisted by operating the switchboard. She graduated from Patterson Union High School in 1925, and in her senior year was the first female student body president. She received her degree from the University of California in 1929 and continued in college for one more year to obtain a teaching degree. She then taught school the next two years at Hayward and Merced high schools, and returned to Patterson in 1932 following her father's death. She and her mother managed the telephone company from that time untll her brother, the late John Evans Jr., returned from the service and took over its management in the late 1940s. Until her illness, she remained active in both the Evans and Livingston telephone companies, of which she was a co-owner, and served on the board of directors of each. She was also on the boards of the Evans and Evans-Kreiger funeral chapels. She was a charter member and past president of the Patterson Township Historical Society, a charter member and past president of the Soroptimist Club of Patterson, was a past matron of the local chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, from which she had received her 50-year pin, and had received the citizen of the year award from the Patterson-Westley Chamber of Commerce. She also was a member of the board of directors of the El Solyo Village retirement community, and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers Association. Earlier this year she was honored by the California Independent Telephone Association, which awarded her its distinguished service award. She also was named grand Marshall of this year's Apricot Fiesta parade, but could not attend because of illness.
